The family agrees to keep it on the veranda for the week. The week never ends, and the dog is named Kaalu.

Then on the twentieth morning, as Your child walks out with the school bag, a scratchy voice says, 'Good morning.' The whole house comes running.

↗ The white rabbit, Gulab, is allowed in the garden every evening, and one evening it goes under the hedge and does not come back. Your child searches till dark and cries. Bhaiya says rabbits come home when they are hungry. Your child puts a plate of carrot tops by the hutch and sits still on the step. At nine, two ears appear in the hedge. Gulab comes to the plate, and Your child does not grab, only waits till it hops inside.

↗ The puppy, Bholu, needs his first injection, and Your child is more scared than Bholu. The vet's waiting room has a cat in a basket, a very big dog and a boy with a tortoise. Dr Rao lifts Bholu onto the steel table and lets Your child hold his front paws. The injection takes one second, and Bholu only wags. Dr Rao gives Your child a small booklet with Bholu's name in it for all his injections. Your child keeps it in the school bag pocket.

↗ Bholu has done his business on Dadi's good carpet, and Dadi says the puppy goes back if it happens again. Your child does not argue. Your child gets the bucket, the old cloth and the newspaper, cleans it up alone, and then sits with Papa to make a plan: out to the garden every hour, first thing in the morning, last thing at night. Three days later, Bholu scratches at the door to go out. Dadi pretends not to notice, but she lets him sleep by her feet.

↗ The new cat, Chammach, has not eaten for a whole day, and Your child worries she is sick. Mumma says maybe the cat is scared of the big steel bowl. Your child tries the small saucer from the tea set. Nothing. Then Your child moves the saucer from the noisy kitchen to the quiet corner under the stairs, and sits far away. Chammach creeps out, sniffs, and eats every bit. Some creatures want a quiet place to eat, just like some children.

↗ Papa said the puppy was Your child's responsibility, and that means the morning walk before the school bus at seven. On the first cold morning, Your child wants to stay in bed. Then Bholu stands at the bedroom door with the leash in his mouth. They walk to the park, where the milkman waves, the temple bell rings, and the crows are just waking. Your child has never seen the colony this early. Now the bed is the boring part.

↗ At Nani's village, Your child finds a small tortoise by the pond and wants to take it home to the city. Your child is quiet for a long time, then puts the tortoise back at the water's edge. Nani says Your child can visit it every summer. And every summer, there is a tortoise at the pond.

↗ Mithu the parrot flaps against the bars every time someone walks by, and Your child hates to see it. Dadi says parrots were never meant to be in cages, and asks what Your child wants to do. Your child thinks hard. With Papa, they build a big wire enclosure on the terrace with a guava branch inside, twice the size of the cage, open to the sky through the mesh. Mithu still cannot fly away, but now Mithu flies. That is the difference.

↗ Bholu eats a whole chocolate bar left on the sofa and is sick all night. Chachi drives everyone to the vet at six in the morning. Dr Rao says chocolate is poison for dogs, and Bholu needs to stay for the day. Your child feels terrible about the chocolate bar. That evening Bholu comes home wobbly but wagging, and Your child makes a sign for the fridge in red crayon: NO CHOCOLATE FOR BHOLU. It stays there for years.

↗ Bholu jumps on everyone who comes through the door, and the postman has stopped coming past the gate. Your child watches a video with Didi and learns that dogs learn with small treats and one word. Every day for a week, Your child says sit, waits, and gives a piece of biscuit when Bholu's bottom touches the floor. On Sunday the postman comes with a parcel, and Bholu sits. The postman gives Bholu a biscuit of his own.

Papa takes a photo of Your child in the middle of seven wagging tails.
