Noor had been waiting all afternoon for the woodland library to open. At last, the first star appeared. Noor put on a red cardigan, picked up an amber lantern, and followed the path between the trees. Inside the lantern, a little light glowed like a spoonful of honey.

Beside a mossy stone sat a hedgehog with an empty lantern. ‘I wanted to hear tonight’s story,’ he said, ‘but I cannot see the path.’ Noor looked at the narrow pool of light around their shoes. There was just enough to take the next step.
‘Then we will take the next step together,’ Noor said. They walked slowly, keeping the lantern between them. At a fork in the path, the hedgehog stopped. ‘I know that root! The library is this way.’ He had noticed something Noor had missed.
A friendly glow blinked above the hedgehog’s empty lantern. Then another. Two fireflies had settled inside its open paper shade. The hedgehog lifted it carefully. Now there were two little pools of light, touching at the edges.
The fox librarian was waiting at the old tree’s door. ‘You found your way,’ she said. Noor shook their head and smiled. ‘We found it together.’ Inside, books lined the curved wooden walls, and a round cushion waited beside a much smaller one.
They set their lanterns on the windowsill. Outside, the fireflies rose into the leaves. Inside, the fox opened a book. Noor leaned close enough for the hedgehog to see the pictures, and the first story of the evening began.
